Procrastination!

Definition

Procrastination is the act of delaying something of importance irrespective of the consequences that follow.

Often described as ‘the thief of time,’ the delayed task is generally procrastinated for another of lesser importance, and can create a sense of personal guilt that can interrupt ones’ life. Studies across the United Kingdom, the United States and Australia have found that 20% of adults procrastinate chronically. This number is increased greatly for university and school students, with up to 95% of these populations procrastinating on a regular basis (Centre for Clinical Interventions, 2008).

What is NUSA doing about it?

Students procrastinate. Students on NUSA Council procrastinate. We want to know about your procrastination.

NUSA is running a survey to find out about levels of procrastination amongst students at the University of Newcastle.

In doing this we hope to find common patterns, and thus common solutions to the issue of procrastination. You can leave tips on procrastination and resources. We will make these available for all students on our website.

We also want to see if students procrastinate in different ways according to the type of assessment and type of student.

Finally, procrastination can be really serious and affects our grades, other people's opinions of us and our own self-esteem.

This survey is completely anonymous, though you can choose to be kept updated. Hit the link above to go to the survey, or go to: surveys.nusa.org.au and choose from the list of current surveys.

Procrastination does not equal laziness. It’s a part of being a student. However, it can have consequences.

HOW DO YOU PROCRASTINATE?

FACEBOOK, TWITTER, YOUTUBE, NEWCASTLE UNIVERSITY STALKERSPACE, AMAZON, TELEVISION, FILMS, CLEANING, SOCIALISING, CATCHING UP ON CORRESPONDENCE, EATING, LEARNING TO COOK NEW DISHES, READING, AND THE LIST GOES ON…

Procrastination is a real problem for me – What can I do?

If procrastination is adversely affecting your studies, health or life generally then we recommend you seek help. If you think your problems are more academic, then talk to your lecturer, tutor or course co-ordinator.

The desk [https://www.thedesk.org.au/login] is an online resource designed by University of Queensland and supported by beyondblue. This is designed for University students and contains resources, modules and some self-assessments. UoN supports this initiative and students last semester should have received an email about it from the University.
